Don’t lose your marvels!

Several years ago I was flying into Chicago’s O’Hare from the west. I think I was making a connection to somewhere, but I don’t recall for sure. What I do remember is that it was a perfectly clear day. I could see suburban Chicago stretching in every direction (except east; too wet!), and the downtown skyline with Lake Michigan glittering just beyond.

I had this moment of pure amazement, pure wonder, pure marvel. Here was one of the largest lakes in the world, looking very much like an ocean from my vantage point, with sunshine flecking at me (I may have just invented a verb), and I marveled at the majesty of God’s creation. Then, as I looked at the Sears Tower, A.T. & T., the Aon Center and the rest of the skyscrapers, I marveled at humans’ achievements. Imagine the cooperation these things require! The vision, the imagination, the mathematics, the cranes! Truly marvelous.

I’m guessing most, or all, of the plane’s other passengers were doing their spreadsheets, playing Solitaire, or napping. I decided that this would be good advice for me and for the rest of us:  Never lose your marvels!
